“17:00 – 17:30” Jay’s WhatsApp pings through, and Neil and I slip into our roles as two very relaxed guests at Inkungu Lodge. We are having “the best holiday ever” (and looking our very best lodge-guest selves hahaha). Upstairs, Angie is getting dressed up for a fancy dinner that Jay had (apparently) booked in Winterton. She has no idea that her surprise Drakensberg proposal is about to happen right outside, with Cathkin Peak watching over the whole thing.
I LOVE it when someone gets in touch to plan a surprise proposal. I can feel the nervous excitement through their emails already! Getting every detail right, nailing the timing, and lining up everyone involved… all whilst keeping it secret from your other half. That takes some serious behind-the-scenes juggling! 💕

Choosing Inkungu Lodge for a Drakensberg Proposal With a View
When Jay first emailed, he had already chosen the Drakensberg. He just didn’t know where yet. He had one requirement: a full view of the Cathkin Peak and Monks Cowl range. So I sent him a list of spots to look at, and Inkungu Lodge was on it.
The moment Jay saw the view from the lodge, he knew it was the perfect place. And so the planning began!
Inkungu Lodge sits in the Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg. At the front of the lodge, the bar opens onto a rimflow pool. Beyond the pool, rolling green lawns lead your eye all the way to the mountains (the very same Monks Cowl peaks that framed Sharne and Ryan’s family photoshoot).

Planning a Drakensberg Proposal Around Mountain Weather
As our emails went back and forth, I got to know Jay a little better and we started the planning. The volatile Drakensberg weather was a pretty big concern for both of us, so we decided that I’d stay over for a night… giving us two days to choose from (phew). Saturday was always the dream day, and as it happened, Saturday was a pearl of a day! They went hiking, did a few activities, and then came back to the lodge, where I was waiting.
Jay knows that Angie loves photos, and he knew she would want to look beautiful in them. So he booked a “fancy dinner” and told her to get dressed up. How thoughtful is that? (I found out afterwards that he even made a nail appointment for her the week before).
Back to the plan… which was SIMPLE hahaha. My husband and I would hang out in the lounge and bar as regular guests. When Jay and Angie came down for dinner, he would suggest a selfie at the edge of the pool, with the mountains behind them. Then I would wander over and say, “Oh my gosh, I’ve got my camera here. Would you guys like a proper photo, because this is so beautiful?”
Of course, Angie would say yes. And that is exactly when Jay would drop to one knee. Eek! I feel the same levels of excitement just typing that out!
Between the two of us, we refined the plan beautifully. But at some point, Jason had to be in the moment and leave the rest to me.
We had a rough ETA, a picnic set up just out of view by the Inkungu Lodge owners, and bar snacks for me to nibble at. Snacks make everything more chilled, right? The only real variable was how long Angie would take to get ready.
One Knee at the Pool’s Edge: The Drakensberg Proposal Unfolds
Jay and Angie walked out onto the pool deck, all dressed up and excited for dinner. The mountain was out in all of its splendour. The sun was on its way down, and even the November humidity was tolerable.
I offered them a proper photo JUST as planned. Angie was so stoked! “Yes please!!!” And in that moment, with her smiling at the camera, Jay dropped to his knee… 💍!

The Key Ingredient: My Husband Joining Me For This Drakensberg Engagement
One of my favourite things about this proposal was having Neil with me. For those of you who don’t already know, Neil is my husband and he is also a stellar photographer. He shot weddings whilst he was studying to be a chiropractor. These days he works full-time in chiropractic, but he still joins me as my second photographer (and my undercover relaxed-casual-poolside-partner mwahahaha).
When you aren’t supposed to look like a photographer, arriving as a couple changes everything. One random person with a camera suddenly appearing to take your photo can feel a bit sus. A happy couple on holiday, however, they blend right in. It feels a lot more natural, and a lot less like “hold on, something is going on”.
We also shoot very differently. I tend to shoot wide, whilst Neil works with his zoom lens and gets the tighter crops. Together, those two perspectives give the gallery a really lovely, rounded feel.

At one point I showed Jay and Angie the back of my camera, and Neil snapped a few behind-the-scenes photos of that moment. Angie was so happy, and they were both SO excited about their photos.

A Picnic Under the Tree After the Surprise Proposal
Just around the corner, under a beautiful tree on the lawn, the picnic was waiting. It was a very hot day, so the champagne had to stay in the fridge until the last minute. The chocolates were melting too! Thanks to the lodge owners, it all came together in the end.

Then we wandered around the gardens for a while. There was a lot of laughing, a lot of hugging, and a whole lot of ring-admiring.

Popping Champagne at Sunset With the Drakensberg Behind Them
Right at the end of the shoot, the sun was going down and the sky turned golden. So I convinced Jay and Angie to pop the champagne at the edge of the pool, with the mountains behind them.
What a moment! Angie was laughing and showing off her ring, while Jay sprayed champagne everywhere. I know this is one of their favourite moments from the whole day!

Pro Tip: How to Spray Champagne Properly
Most people try to pop the cork and spray at the same time, and it never works. So I always coach couples beforehand. First, pop the champagne. Then calmly put your thumb over the top of the bottle and give it a shake. Finally, slowly lift your thumb and let it spray! 🍾
Planning Your Own Drakensberg Proposal
If you are dreaming up a proposal of your own, here are a few things I’ve learnt along the way.
Where is the best place for a proposal in the Drakensberg?
Choose the view and the vibe first. Jay knew he wanted a view of the Cathkin Peak and Monks Cowl range, and he wanted a lodge or hotel so that he could also have a picnic set up. That made finding the right spot easy. A lodge with a clear mountain view and a private corner for a picnic gives you a beautiful setting and access to people that you can count on.
When is the best time of day for a Drakensberg proposal?
Late afternoon works beautifully, because you can flow straight into golden hour for your photos. If you have flexibility, make a backup plan for a second day too (especially in summer thanks to thunderstorms). Mountain weather changes quickly and the last thing you want is no plan B.
How do I keep the proposal a secret?
Give your partner a reason to dress up, like a dinner booking, and let your photographer blend in. Then hand the logistics over. Your job is to be in the moment, and my job is to make sure everything happens around you.
Jay (and Angie), thank you for trusting me with your Drakensberg proposal!
Jay, thank you for planning every detail with sooooo much love, and for knowing exactly what would make Angie happiest. Angie, thank you for your laugh, your joy, and that look on your face when Jay dropped to his knee.
(I went on to photograph Angie and Jason’s wedding too, but that is a story for another day! Yay!)
If you are planning a proposal and want someone experienced in your corner, I would love to hear from you!
